What if my film is over 5 minutes in length, and does this need to include the credits?
The total running time of your entry can’t be any longer than five (5) minutes. That includes credits. If it’s longer, your film won’t be eligible to be a finalist in any of the categories.
What is the deadline for entries and what if my film is submitted late?
Entries are due by 3.00pm on Friday 19th October 2012. If your film is submitted late, we’re sorry, but it can’t be accepted.
In what format should my film be submitted?
All entries must include the following to be eligible:
Two (2) copies of your film as a PAL DVD, labelled with: Entrant’s name, (School/Individual), film title, entry category and running time.
One (1) copy of the Entry Form filled out completely and legibly to: MyState Student Film Festival, 172 Collins Street, Hobart, TAS 7000
Entries that include music protected by copyright must include all necessary permissions/authorisations by the artist or legal music owner.
What are the guidelines around the PG rating?
The Office of Film and Literature Classification guidelines (Classification Determination 2007) outline classifications for all films and computer games.
Where can I obtain copyright free music?
There are a lot of free and cheap places on the internet where you can get pre-made music and sound effects to put in your film. Always make sure the music you’ve found is legally okay to use. Here are some worthy starting points:
● www.archive.org has an archive of free music that is out of copyright
● www.freesound.org has free sound effects
● www.creativecommons.org is a database for all kinds of media covered by a Creative Commons copyright licence. Depending on the license specified, you may be able to use a piece by simply crediting the author. Be sure to carefully check the license next to each piece to make sure you follow its requirements.
If you’ve got some spare cash you can buy stock music to use in your film. Here’s a few websites to get you started.
The other option is to write and record your own music. Software like Garage Band or Fruity Loops make it quite easy, and they include instrument loops you can piece together if you can’t record instruments yourself.
Where can I obtain a license to use copyrighted music?
Visit the APRAAMCOS website (Australian Performing Rights Association Limited, and the Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners Society), where you can get a license to use some copyrighted music. This site has heaps of valuable information about costs and time frames for obtaining a license. The Schoolspage has information which may be helpful, such as when you require a license, and what sort of license you need.
The Australian Copyright Council website has more information on copyright laws.
If I enter my film in the MyState Student Film Festival, will I still own the copyright to my film or it will be transferred to MyState automatically?
You will still own the copyright to your film, however, as part of the Terms and Conditions of the MyState Student Film Festival, entrants consent to MyState screening the film to the public in various capacities.
When will I be notified if I am a finalist?

Is the Awards Event free?

Does an invitation to the Awards Event mean that my film is a finalist?
