Now in its ninth year, the MyState Student Film Festival continues to grow as the state’s premier artistic event for students to showcase their talent and creativity in the visual arts.

The competition encourages students to develop an interest in filmmaking, from planning through to production by involving them in writing, directing, editing and performing.

MyState Financial is committed to nurturing the many talents of our young people, and providing a platform for students to develop their skills in writing and filmmaking. We aim to provide an avenue for Tasmania’s youth to showcase, and gain recognition of their talents.

The Festival is a major event in the school year, with staff and students gaining invaluable creative and communication skills, uncovering hidden talents, all while getting to explore the world of film.

Tasmanian students from Kindergarten to University are eligible to enter. With cash and prizes worth over $10,000, the Festival also provides practical rewards for students who wish to further their career in this exciting field.

In 2010, 117 films were submitted by more than 40 schools made by over 500 dedicated filmmakers around the state. Each were rewarded for their creativity and hard work, enjoying the spotlight at a red carpet Awards Ceremony at the Theatre Royal. Over 500 participants, friends and family were present, sharing in each other’s success. The Festival was a huge success, which could only be made possible through the contribution made by teachers and students.

Last year’s films have been viewed over 41,000 times by people from across the world. For the first time each entry to the Festival was eligible for the People’s Choice Award. This allowed viewers to vote for their favourite film online. Over one thousand votes were submitted before the winner was revealed. Votes came in from across the globe, from as far away as the UK, South Africa and China.

In 2011, we’re building upon the past festivals to make it bigger and better. And for the first time, we’re providing educational resources that give teachers and students all they need to confidently make great films. For students across Tasmania, 2011 is their year to make it.
